Temporary protection (§24 AufenthG) for Ukrainians
Ukrainian citizens receive temporary protection in Germany: a residence permit and access to work. Here is how it works.
After the full-scale invasion, the EU activated the Temporary Protection Directive. In Germany it is implemented through §24 of the Residence Act (Aufenthaltsgesetz, AufenthG): Ukrainian citizens can obtain a residence permit without the usual asylum procedure.
What it provides:
- legal residence in Germany (Aufenthaltstitel);
- the right to work;
- access to basic social benefits and medical care.
Where to apply:
- to the foreigners' authority (Ausländerbehörde) at your place of residence — it issues the permit;
- official information and online services are provided by the BAMF portal “Germany4Ukraine”.
The period of protection is extended by EU decisions, and the dates change — follow official updates. The specific documents and steps depend on your city and the authority in charge.
