Spain: temporary protection and first steps
How Ukrainians can obtain temporary protection in Spain, where to apply and where to find up-to-date information.
Spain grants Ukrainians temporary protection (protección temporal) under the common EU mechanism. In July 2026, EU countries agreed to extend this protection until March 2028; check the specific validity periods of your documents with official sources.
What the status provides:
- a residence and work permit;
- access to healthcare and basic support;
- a foreigner's card (TIE).
First steps:
- apply for temporary protection through the relevant services (police / immigration offices);
- register at your place of residence with the town hall (empadronamiento);
- for up-to-date steps, consult the official portals and UNHCR.
