Switzerland: protection status S and first steps
Switzerland has its own protection status S. How to register and what is known about the deadlines.
Switzerland is not part of the EU and grants Ukrainians its own protection status — Schutzstatus S. The Federal Council has extended status S at least until 4 March 2027. In 2026 the future of the status after 2027 is being discussed, including possible changes to the conditions — follow official updates.
What status S provides:
- the right to reside and work;
- access to health care and basic support.
First steps:
- submit an application for status S to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), including through the online application RegisterMe;
- you will be referred to a federal centre and a canton.
