Netherlands: temporary protection and first steps
Temporary protection in the Netherlands: registering with the municipality (gemeente) and the IND, and where to find up-to-date information.
The Netherlands grants Ukrainians temporary protection under the EU mechanism. In July 2026, the EU agreed to extend protection until March 2028 — check the validity of your documents with official sources.
What the status provides:
- the right to reside and work;
- access to housing, healthcare and education.
First steps:
- register with the municipality (gemeente) in the population register (BRP) and with the Immigration Service (IND);
- obtain the document confirming temporary protection;
- official information is provided by the RefugeeHelp portal.
