Canada: status for Ukrainians and first steps
The CUAET programme is closed to new applications. What this means for those already in Canada and for new arrivals.
Canada does not use the EU temporary protection mechanism. The special programme for Ukrainians, CUAET (Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel), is closed to new applications.
What this means:
- those already in Canada under CUAET (who arrived by 31 March 2024) can extend their open work permit — extensions are valid until approximately 31 March 2027;
- new arrivals from abroad generally use the ordinary visa routes (TRV tourist visa, work or study permit) and pay the standard fees;
- there are separate streams for those who have family in Canada.
This is one of those areas where the rules change quickly — always check the current steps on the official IRCC website.
