Kindergeld: child benefit
Parents in Germany are entitled to a monthly benefit for each child (Kindergeld). Who is eligible and where to apply.
Kindergeld is a monthly state benefit for each child, paid by the Familienkasse at the Employment Agency. Among those entitled are families with temporary protection, if the residence conditions are met.
What is important to know:
- the benefit is paid for each child, usually until the age of 18 (longer if the child is in education);
- the tax number (Steuer-ID) of the child and of the parents is required;
- the application is submitted to the Familienkasse — online or on paper.
How to apply:
- fill in the application (Antrag auf Kindergeld) and the «Kind» annex;
- attach the birth certificate and proof of residence;
- the Familienkasse may request additional documents.
Amounts and conditions change from time to time — check the current ones on the Familienkasse website. The specifics depend on your situation, so verify them with the official source.
